Respiratory Protective Equipment
Respiratory protective equipment (RPE) protects your lungs from airborne hazards that engineering controls can't eliminate: dust, fumes, vapours, biological agents. The key decision? Matching protection level to hazard type and exposure duration.
What Type of Respiratory Protection Do You Need?
Disposable FFP respirators suit short-duration tasks with clear hazard profiles. FFP1 handles nuisance dust; FFP2 covers fine particles and moderate risks; FFP3 offers maximum filtration for toxic substances. Reusable half-mask and full-mask respirators work better for prolonged exposure—you replace filters, not the whole unit.
Critical point: tight-fitting RPE requires face fit testing to work. Gaps kill protection entirely, no matter the certification level.
- Disposable FFP masks – quick single-use protection for dust, mists, and low-to-moderate hazards
- Reusable respirators – replaceable cartridge filters for chemicals, gases, or combination hazards
- Powered options – battery-assisted airflow for extended comfort in contaminated environments
Filter type matters as much as mask rating. Particulate filters stop dust and fumes; gas filters handle vapours; combination cartridges tackle multiple contaminants. Check individual product specs for certified protection scope and compliance with COSHH regulations.
