Understanding Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE)

Respiratory protective equipment meaning: PPE designed to protect the wearer from inhaling harmful airborne substances when workplace exposure cannot be controlled by ventilation or substitution. UK COSHH regulations mandate RPE provision where engineering controls alone don't eliminate respiratory hazards. HSE guidance (HSG53) defines two main types of respiratory protection: respirators that filter contaminated air, and breathing apparatus that supplies clean air from an independent source.

Why Must Respiratory Protective Equipment Be Face Fit Tested?

Face fit testing is legally required for tight-fitting RPE because even small gaps between mask and face allow contaminated air to bypass filters completely. A poorly fitted FFP3 respirator performs worse than a correctly fitted FFP1. Testing confirms the seal works for your specific facial structure and identifies which models actually protect you. Qualitative tests use taste/smell agents; quantitative tests measure leakage numerically. Retest annually or after significant weight change, dental work, or facial scarring.

FFP Ratings and EN 149 Certification Explained

EN 149:2001+A1:2009 defines three filtering facepiece (FFP) classes based on filtration efficiency and maximum inward leakage:

• FFP1: 80% filter efficiency, 4x exposure reduction – low-risk dusts, non-toxic particles
• FFP2: 94% filter efficiency, 10x exposure reduction – construction dust, metal fumes, wood dust, moderate biological agents
• FFP3: 99% filter efficiency, highest protection – toxic dusts, asbestos, welding fumes, high-risk pathogens

Higher ratings reduce breathability and increase cost. Overspecification causes discomfort and poor compliance; underspecification fails to protect. Match the rating to the actual hazard assessment.

Reusable Respirators and Filter Selection

Half-mask and full-face reusable respirators accept threaded filter cartridges matched to specific contaminants. Particulate (P) filters stop solid and liquid aerosols; gas/vapour filters use activated carbon for organic vapours (A), inorganic gases (B), acid gases (E), ammonia (K). Combination filters (e.g. A2P3) handle mixed hazards common in spray painting, chemical handling, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Replace filters per manufacturer schedule or when breathing resistance increases—saturated filters don't regenerate.
