EN343 - Rain Protection
This European Norm is used to test materials against "rain protection"
Tests carried out are done using specified requirements.
Methods of testing are applicable to the materials and protection against showers, rain and humidity.
The parameters are set out below:-
X: Water Penetration Resistance Classification (3 Levels)
quality is one of the most important for adequate protection. It ranges
in levels from 1 - 3 (1 being the lowest, resulting in minimal
protection and 3 being the highest)
Y: Water vapour resistance Classification - Breathing properties (3 levels)
EN 343, uses a water vapour resistance value Ret (m2.
Pa/W), which is measured by the skinmodel test ISO 11092 (a device for
measuring the water vapour resistance of a material or a composite)
Again this ranges in levels from 1-3 (1 being the lowest, resulting in minimal protection and 3 being the highest)
garments evacuate the perspiration away from the skin and from the
garments. When too much humidity has accumulated in the clothing,
condensation occurs and the skin feels clammy and uncomfortable.
Selecting a garment with a higher level of Water vapour resistance will
result in the item being more breathable and more comfortable to wear.
