EN 166 and Optical Class

Many face shields in this collection meet EN 166, the European standard for personal eye and face protection. EN 166 covers optical quality, mechanical strength, and resistance to specific hazards (chemical droplets, molten metal splash, high-speed particles). Each visor carries a marking code that tells you what it's tested for. Optical class matters for tasks requiring visual precision: Class 1 is suitable for continuous wear and fine work, while Class 2 is acceptable for intermittent use or less critical applications. Always verify the exact marking on the product page—not all shields carry the same protection scope.

Mounting Systems and Integration

You'll find three main mounting approaches here:

• Standalone headgear – adjustable ratchet or crown strap, worn without a hard hat
• Helmet-mounted – clips or slots directly onto safety helmets for integrated head and face protection
• Respirator-compatible – designed to pair with powered air systems (e.g. 3M Versaflo) or half-mask respirators

If you're already using a hard hat or respirator, check compatibility before ordering. Helmet-mount adapters vary by manufacturer, and not every visor fits every helmet slot. Respirator hoods with integrated visors (like Versaflo) offer sealed protection for environments with both airborne and splash hazards.

Visor Materials and Coatings

Most visors use polycarbonate for impact resistance and optical clarity. Polycarbonate won't shatter under high-speed particle impact, which is why it's the material of choice for grinding, cutting, and chipping operations. Coatings extend service life: anti-fog prevents misting in humid or high-exertion environments, and anti-scratch (hardcoat) resists abrasion from dust and handling. Uncoated visors fog quickly and scratch easily, shortening replacement intervals. If you're working in hot kitchens, foundries, or enclosed spaces, prioritize fog resistance. For outdoor construction or dusty workshops, hardcoat matters more.

Replacement and Service Life

Visors are wear items. Scratches, chemical residue, and coating degradation reduce optical clarity and protection effectiveness. Many models in this range feature replaceable screens: you swap the visor and keep the headgear. This cuts long-term cost and waste. Inspect visors weekly for cracks, deep scratches, or coating failure. Replace immediately if optical quality drops or if the visor has taken a significant impact—even polycarbonate can micro-fracture. Store face shields away from solvents, UV light, and extreme heat; polycarbonate degrades under prolonged solvent exposure and UV radiation.
