How to Choose the Right Cut Level

Cut levels range from A (lowest) to F (highest) under EN 388:2016 standards. The level you need depends on the sharpness and force of the hazards in your workplace. Cut B and C suit light packaging and assembly work. Cut D and E handle metal fabrication, glass cutting, and automotive parts. Cut F is for extreme blade contact—slaughterhouse work, industrial cutting machinery, and sharp metal stamping.

Combined Protection Options

Many roles require more than cut resistance alone. Heat and cut gloves protect when handling hot metal or glass—the outer shell resists heat contact while the liner prevents cuts. Chemical and cut variants add a coating (nitrile, PVC, or latex) over a cut-resistant liner, giving you splash protection without sacrificing blade safety. Impact and cut gloves include thermoplastic rubber (TPR) knuckle guards and finger shields for construction, demolition, and oil and gas work.

Specialist Cut Gloves by Industry

Cut resistant welding gloves pair a leather outer (for spark and abrasion protection) with a cut-resistant aramid or HPPE liner. Mechanics gloves prioritise dexterity—thinner liners, close fit, often touchscreen-compatible fingertips. Gardening gloves use breathable knits with cut liners in the palm and fingers, keeping hands cool during extended outdoor work while protecting against thorns, pruning shears, and sharp stems.

Common Fit and Comfort Considerations

Cut resistant gloves often feel stiffer than unlined work gloves—especially at higher cut levels where thicker HPPE or aramid yarns are used. This is normal. Look for options with nitrile foam or polyurethane palm coatings if you need better grip without bulk. Sizes typically run from 7 (small) to 11 (XXL); always check the sizing chart on individual product pages. A glove that's too loose reduces dexterity and increases snag risk; too tight and it restricts circulation.

What Cut Gloves Don't Protect Against

Cut resistance protects against slicing hazards—it does not prevent puncture from needles or sharp points, which is measured separately under EN 388. Cut gloves also won't protect against chainsaw strikes, which require specialised chainsaw gloves with specific EN 381 certification.
