How Thinsulate Insulation Works

3M Thinsulate insulation consists of extremely fine polyester microfibers – much thinner than standard synthetic fills. These microfibers trap more air molecules in less space, creating an efficient thermal barrier without adding thickness. Thinsulate also blocks radiant heat loss (the heat your body radiates outward), which standard batting often allows to escape. The fibers absorb less than 1% water by weight, so even in damp conditions – condensation in cold stores, light rain, sweat – the insulation retains its thermal performance. This hydrophobic property sets Thinsulate apart from cotton or wool liners, which lose insulating ability when wet.

What the Gram Weight Actually Means

Thinsulate is rated in grams per square metre (gsm). Higher gsm = more insulation, but also slightly more bulk and reduced dexterity. Here's how to match weight to application:

• 40–100gsm: Light insulation for active outdoor work (landscaping, construction, deliveries) where movement generates body heat. Prevents overheating while still protecting fingers in mild-to-moderate cold.
• 100–150gsm: Mid-weight protection for stationary work in cold environments (cold stores, winter warehousing, static outdoor roles). Balances warmth with reasonable dexterity.
• 150–200gsm: Heavy insulation for extreme cold or minimal-activity tasks (gate security in winter, outdoor inspection roles, arctic logistics). Expect reduced fine motor control at this weight.

Many buyers over-specify, choosing 200gsm for general warehouse work and finding staff remove the gloves to operate picking equipment or scanners. Match insulation weight to both temperature and activity level.

Shell Materials and Use Cases
