Why Ordinary Clothing Fails in Thermal Emergencies

Synthetic fabrics—polyester, nylon, acrylic, rayon—melt when exposed to flames. They adhere to skin and dramatically worsen burn severity. EN ISO 11612: Heat and Flame Protection Codes Explained

Products meeting EN ISO 11612 protect against radiant heat, convective heat, contact heat exposure, or molten metal splash risks. The standard uses a multi-code system showing specific protection capabilities. Code A (limited flame spread) is the mandatory baseline—fabrics must not continue burning or produce flaming debris after flame removal. A1 indicates surface ignition testing; A2 denotes edge ignition testing.

Optional performance codes indicate additional protection levels. Code B measures convective heat protection across four levels (B1-B4). Code C evaluates radiant heat protection (C1-C4), critical for work near furnaces or open flames. Code D (molten aluminium splash) and Code E (molten iron splash) specify protection against molten metal types, essential for foundries. Code F assesses contact heat protection across three levels. Higher numerical levels within each code category indicate superior performance.

EN ISO 11611: Welding-Specific Requirements

Welding operations present unique thermal hazards. EN ISO 11611 specifically addresses protective clothing for welding and allied processes, mandating protection against small molten metal splashes (spatter), short-duration flame contact, ultraviolet radiation from welding arcs, and radiant heat. Class 1 suits less hazardous welding methods with minimal spatter (fabrics must withstand 15 molten metal drops). Class 2 addresses more hazardous techniques including overhead welding with heavy spatter (requires fabrics to withstand 25 molten metal drops).

Design requirements under EN ISO 11611 minimize spark entrapment risks. Pockets require protective flaps, external metallic components must be covered, and closures must prevent spatter entry. Proper fit is essential: loose garments create pockets where spatter accumulates, while excessively tight clothing restricts movement and may gap during working positions.

Inherent vs. Treated Flame Resistance

Flame resistant fabrics achieve protective properties through two approaches. Inherently flame resistant (IFR) materials like Nomex and Kevlar possess flame resistance as an intrinsic molecular property. These fabrics maintain protection permanently throughout their service life regardless of washing frequency. While more expensive initially, IFR garments deliver superior durability and reliable long-term protection.

Flame retardant treated (FRT) fabrics start as conventional materials (typically cotton or cotton-polyester blends) then receive chemical treatments creating flame resistant properties. FRT garments cost less initially but protection gradually degrades through laundering. Options in this collection include FRT cotton maintaining flame resistance for minimum 50 industrial washes when properly laundered—using appropriate detergents without chlorine bleach or fabric softeners that damage FR treatments.

Critical Usage and Maintenance Requirements

Never wear synthetic clothing underneath FR garments—melting undergarments cause severe burns even when outer FR layers protect. Cotton or wool undergarments are acceptable. Garments must be clean and dry—oil, grease, or chemical contamination dramatically reduces flame resistance and may cause garments to burn. Laundering requires strict protocols: use only recommended detergents, never use chlorine bleach or fabric softeners, and avoid excessive water temperatures. Any garment exposed to flame during an incident must be immediately retired from service regardless of visible damage.
