EN 397 is the core specification for industrial safety helmets in the UK and EU. EN 12492 covers mountaineering and climbing helmets, relevant for rope access and work-at-height specialists. Check the moulded markings on the helmet shell – compliance is visible there, not just on a label.

Most buyers focus on impact protection alone, but the real decision is matching optional markings to your site hazards. Electrical work near live circuits? You need the 440V marking. Foundry or welding environments with molten metal splash? Look for MM certification. Outdoor winter sites below -20°C? The -30°C rating matters, because standard helmets can crack on impact in extreme cold. Temperature ratings aren't theoretical – they're tested thresholds that determine whether the helmet shell stays intact or fails when you need it most.
