Standards and Certification Scope

Products in this collection include models certified to EN 352-1, the current British and European standard for earmuffs. This standard sets out general requirements: SNR ratings, material durability, comfort specifications, and marking requirements. Check each product listing for the exact certification version and performance level – EN 352-1:2020 is the latest iteration, but earlier versions may still appear on stock manufactured before the update.

All compliant ear defenders must display: manufacturer name, EN number, CE marking, size indication, and whether the product is reusable. If these markings are missing or illegible, the defender doesn't meet the standard and shouldn't be on-site.

Key Selection Criteria: SNR vs Noise Exposure

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 set two action levels. At 80 dB(A), employers must provide hearing protection on request. At 85 dB(A), it's mandatory. But here's the mistake most buyers make: specifying the highest SNR available when a moderate rating would be safer.

The HSE recommends SNR around 20 dB for typical 90 dB(A) environments. Why? Because over-protection isolates workers from essential sounds – reversing alarms, verbal warnings, machine fault signals. A 37 dB defender in a 90 dB environment leaves the wearer at 53 dB, well below the level where they can hear colleagues or equipment cues. That creates different hazards: collisions, missed instructions, delayed reaction to breakdowns.

Match SNR to actual measured noise levels, not worst-case guesses. If your site ranges between 85–95 dB, a 27–30 dB defender is often the better choice than a 35 dB model.

Materials, Weight and All-Day Wearability

Ear defenders in this range use ABS shells and acoustic foam seals to balance durability with noise reduction. Weight varies from 187 g (compact folding models) to around 350 g for extreme-attenuation designs like the 3M Peltor X5. That 163 g difference matters over an eight-hour shift – heavier defenders increase neck fatigue and pressure headaches, which leads to removal and non-compliance.

Padded headbands distribute pressure across a wider contact area. Spacer technology (pioneered by 3M Peltor) holds the cups slightly away from the head, improving ventilation and reducing heat build-up in warm environments. Electronic ear defenders offer frequency-targeted protection, cutting harmful noise while amplifying speech – useful on construction sites where communication and protection must coexist.

Common Specification Mistakes

• Choosing SNR based on peak noise instead of time-weighted average exposure – short bursts of 110 dB don't require the same continuous protection as sustained 90 dB.
• Ignoring frequency content – the SNR is an average; if your noise is dominated by high-frequency whine (grinders, saws), check the H value in the HML rating, not just the SNR.
• Assuming higher price equals better protection – a £15 defender with SNR 28 dB may suit your environment better than a £60 model rated 37 dB.
• Forgetting hygiene replacement schedules – foam seals degrade, headbands crack, and acoustic performance drops. Even durable models need periodic replacement; check manufacturer service life guidance.

Hearing loss is gradual and permanent. Workers rarely notice the damage until years later, when tinnitus or conversation difficulty becomes constant. That's why documented noise assessments and appropriate ear defender selection aren't just PPE tick-boxes – they're the difference between a workforce that hears retirement and one that doesn't.
