Understanding EN ISO 20471 Certification for Crew Neck Designs

EN ISO 20471:2013 applies to crew neck hi vis sweatshirts just as it does to hooded styles - same fluorescent fabric and reflective tape requirements, but the absence of a hood simplifies the design. Class 1 needs 0.14m² fluorescent material and 0.10m² reflective tape (warehouse environments, controlled traffic). Class 2 requires 0.50m² fluorescent fabric and 0.13m² reflective tape (building sites, loading bays, moderate-risk zones). Class 3 demands 0.80m² fluorescent material and 0.20m² reflective tape for maximum visibility near high-speed traffic.

The crew neck sits comfortably under hard hat chin straps and doesn't interfere with safety harnesses or breathing apparatus. Retroreflective strips position horizontally across the chest and over shoulders for 360-degree visibility. All certified garments carry CE marking and must display the EN ISO 20471 icon with class number.

Why Crew Neck Beats Hooded Styles in Certain Roles

Hoods catch on equipment. They obstruct your view when you glance over your shoulder. They interfere with harness straps and create snag points around machinery. Hi vis jumpers (the UK term for crew neck pullovers and sweatshirts) eliminate these hazards whilst delivering the same warmth through heavyweight fleece construction - typically 270-300gsm brushed polyester that traps air and breathes during physical work.

Quarter-zip sweatshirts feature a 6-8 inch zipper at the collar.
