Understanding EN 407:2020 Flame Resistance Testing

EN 407 Limited Flame Spread measures what happens when flame contacts glove material. During testing, the middle finger tip is held vertically over a gas burner with direct flame contact for 15 seconds. Once removed, testers measure after-flame time (continued burning) and after-glow time (smouldering without visible flame). Level 1 allows up to 20 seconds after-flame and 120 seconds after-glow – barely acceptable. Level 4 requires under 2 seconds after-flame and under 5 seconds after-glow. The glove essentially self-extinguishes immediately. The innermost surface cannot show melting, the material cannot develop holes exposing skin, and seams must not separate during or after exposure.

Inherently FR vs Chemically Treated Materials

This distinction matters for long-term protection. Inherently flame-resistant (IFR) materials have flame resistance built into their molecular structure and maintain protection through unlimited laundering cycles. Nomex meta-aramid withstands temperatures up to 370°C before decomposing – it chars rather than melts or burns. Kevlar para-aramid offers similar thermal stability plus exceptional tensile strength. Premium leather naturally resists ignition because protein structures carbonise rather than support combustion.

Treated flame-resistant materials start with combustible fabrics like cotton or polyester, then apply chemical finishes (Proban, Pyrovatex) that inhibit ignition. Whilst effective initially, chemical treatments gradually degrade with each wash cycle, UV exposure, and contamination from oils or solvents. After 25-50 washes, treated materials may lose significant FR protection whilst IFR materials maintain full performance indefinitely.

Flame Resistant vs Heat Resistant vs Arc Flash

These three glove types address fundamentally different hazards and are NOT interchangeable. Fire resistant work gloves protect against direct contact with open flames, preventing material ignition and self-sustaining combustion – critical for welding, grinding sparks, and flash fire exposure. Heat resistant gloves protect against conductive, convective, and radiant heat from hot objects at 100-500°C like bakery trays or hot glass but may not resist direct flame. Arc flash gloves (ASTM F2675 rated in cal/cm²) protect against explosive thermal radiation from electrical arcs reaching 19,000°C but provide no electrical shock protection – required for energised electrical work. Some leather fire resistant gloves achieve multiple certifications, but never assume protection beyond stated specifications.

Construction Options by Application

Seamless Kevlar knits give you maximum dexterity for precision work around flames – think welding fabrication where you need finger sensitivity. Fire resistant leather gloves with aramid backs combine grip strength with flame protection across the back of the hand where sparks typically land. Full Nomex construction handles extreme direct flame exposure in foundries and glass manufacturing. Options include neoprene-coated models that add chemical resistance when working with flammable liquids alongside ignition risks. For fireplace and log burner use, fire resistant gloves for fireplace applications typically feature longer gauntlet cuffs to protect forearms.
