ANSI/ISEA 138 and EN 388 Impact Certification

ANSI/ISEA 138-2019 uses a 2.5 kg steel striker dropping with 5 joules of energy onto a force transducer. Testing measures how many kilonewtons (kN) penetrate through the glove to your hand. The standard tests knuckles (8 impacts) and fingers/thumb (10 impacts separately)—whichever area performs worse determines the final rating. Level 1 allows ≤9 kN force transmission (the glove absorbs 55% of impact energy, best protection). Level 2 allows ≤6.5 kN (67.5% absorption, moderate). Level 3 allows ≤4 kN (80% absorption, basic protection). Lower transmitted force numbers mean better protection—it's counterintuitive but Level 1 beats Level 3.

EN 388:2016 impact testing uses the same 5-joule striker method but only tests knuckles and provides a simple Pass/Fail result. Gloves achieving ≤7 kN force transmission receive "P" marking on the EN 388 pictogram; anything above gets "F" (Fail). EN 388 Impact P sits roughly between ANSI Level 1 and Level 2 for protection performance.

Material Engineering and Protection Design

Premium impact gloves use multi-density TPR—softer outer layer deforms first on impact, harder inner layer maximises energy absorption. D3O smart material incorporates non-Newtonian polymers with molecular chains that flow freely during normal movement but lock together instantly on sudden impact, temporarily creating a rigid protective shell before returning to flexible state. Strategic bumper placement focuses on high-risk zones: knuckles (most frequent impact point during tool use and slips), metacarpals (vulnerable when reaching between machinery or handling pipes), and individual finger bars (at risk from pinch points and dropped objects). Skeleton or tread bumper designs balance protection with hand flexibility—raised sections absorb impacts whilst valleys between allow finger articulation and grip dexterity.

Selection Trade-Offs and Dual-Hazard Options

Weight and bulk matter. Maximum protection models with extensive TPR coverage and thick bumpers offer best impact resistance but cause hand fatigue during extended wear and reduce dexterity for detailed work. Lighter designs with strategic knuckle-only padding maintain comfort and flexibility but leave fingers and metacarpals more vulnerable. Dual-hazard protection combines multiple risks: • Cut and impact options pair HPPE cut-resistant liner with TPR bumpers for metal fabrication work • Chemical and impact designs add nitrile coating over TPR for oil and gas valve operations • Heat and impact combinations suit welding and grinding applications

Palm construction affects tactile sensitivity and tool control. Whilst TPR protects the back of hand, palms typically use synthetic leather with silicone printing for grip, goatskin for suppleness, or nitrile coating for grip and chemical resistance. These gloves suit oil and gas drilling rigs, construction sites, mining operations, heavy manufacturing facilities, automotive workshops, warehousing logistics, and metal fabrication plants where workers face regular struck-by, caught-between, or pinch-point hazards affecting hands.
