Understanding EN 374 Chemical Protection

EN 374:2016 is the European standard governing chemical-resistant gloves. It tests three things: penetration (whether chemicals pass through pinholes or defects), permeation (how long it takes chemicals to pass through at a molecular level), and degradation (whether the glove material physically breaks down). Gloves for plumbing should show the EN 374 pictogram and list which specific chemicals they've been tested against – drain cleaners, solvents, and pipe adhesives vary widely in composition.

Chemical protective gloves can also provide mechanical hazard protection (EN 388 for cut and abrasion resistance) and thermal protection where needed. Check the product page for exact certifications and performance levels.

Key Selection Criteria

The best gloves for plumbers depend on what you're doing. For drain cleaning and chemical work, prioritise EN 374-2 waterproof protection and resistance to the specific agents you use. For pipefitting and cutting, you need abrasion and cut resistance (EN 388). For soldering or working on hot water systems, heat-insulating gloves prevent burns during pipe joining.

Dexterity matters. Plumbing snake gloves and work gloves for fine valve adjustments need tactile sensitivity – overspecifying protection adds bulk that makes detailed tasks impossible. Use task-specific gloves rather than one heavy-duty pair for everything.

Wet Work and Dermatitis Risk

Prolonged or frequent contact with water is classified as 'wet work' by the HSE. It strips natural oils from skin, and when combined with soaps or detergents, it's a leading cause of occupational contact dermatitis. Waterproof gloves meeting EN 374-2 create a barrier, but only if they fit properly and stay intact – inspect gloves daily for splits or degradation, especially after chemical exposure.

Common Mistakes

• Using the same gloves for chemical and mechanical tasks – chemicals degrade materials differently, and a glove rated for abrasion may fail rapidly against solvents. • Ignoring breakthrough time – EN 374 permeation ratings tell you how long protection lasts; assuming 'chemical resistant' means all-day protection is unsafe. • Choosing by brand alone without checking which chemicals the glove is actually tested against – EN 374 listings are agent-specific.
