How Gore-Tex Technology Works

Gore-Tex fabric uses an ePTFE membrane developed by W. L. Gore & Associates (founded 1958; membrane breakthrough 1969). The membrane contains over 9 billion microscopic pores per square inch. Each pore is 20,000 times smaller than a liquid water droplet, so rain and puddles can't penetrate. But those same pores are 700 times larger than a water vapor molecule – your foot perspiration escapes as vapor. The result: waterproof protection without the sweat trap of rubberised boots.

The membrane itself remains waterproof, but if the shell is soaked, vapor can't escape efficiently.
