What Are Rigger Gloves?

Rigger gloves were originally designed for oil rig workers who needed hand protection that could handle extreme manual labour, frequent tool handling, and the ability to be removed quickly in emergencies. The design stuck because it works: reinforced leather palms for grip and abrasion resistance, fabric backing for breathability, and a loose fit that won't trap your hands if you need to shed them fast. Today, they're classified as general handling gloves and used across construction, landscaping, forestry, warehouse operations, and engineering.

Materials and Construction

Most riggers gloves use chrome split leather for the palm and knuckle strap. Split leather is the lower, fibrous layer of the hide – tougher and more abrasion-resistant than top-grain leather, but less supple. The backing is typically cotton or canvas, which keeps air circulating during strenuous work. Some models add fleece lining for cold-weather sites, though this reduces dexterity slightly. The leather knuckle protection isn't just cosmetic – it shields the back of your hand from impact and scrapes when you're reaching into tight spaces or handling awkward loads.

EN 388 Mechanical Protection Standards

Many rigger gloves in this collection are tested to EN 388, which measures four types of mechanical risk: • Abrasion resistance (0–4 scale) • Cut resistance (A–F scale, replacing the old 1–5 scale) • Tear resistance (0–4 scale) • Puncture resistance (0–4 scale). Higher numbers mean better protection, but you don't always need maximum ratings. For general haulage and packaging, moderate abrasion and tear resistance is enough. For handling sharp-edged materials or metal components, prioritise cut resistance. Check individual product listings for exact EN 388 performance levels – not all rigger gloves carry the same certification.

Fit, Comfort and When to Replace

Rigger gloves are intentionally loose-fitting. This isn't a sizing error – the design allows you to pull them off quickly if your hand gets caught or if you need to switch to bare-hand dexterity. The trade-off? Less precision for fine tasks. If you're doing detailed assembly or electrical work, these aren't the right glove. Replace leather rigger gloves when the palm shows cracking, thinning, or holes. Once the leather integrity is compromised, abrasion and cut protection drop significantly. Cotton backing usually wears out before the leather does – fraying at the seams is your replacement signal.

Best Use Cases

Rigger gloves suit heavy-duty, outdoor, and manual handling tasks: construction site work, scaffolding, landscaping and grounds maintenance, warehouse picking and packing, agricultural and farming tasks, engineering and general haulage. They're not designed for chemical handling (no EN 374 protection), precision work (too loose), or sustained heat exposure (leather conducts heat). For those applications, switch to specialist gloves. But for rough, repetitive manual work where your hands take a beating, leather rigger gloves are hard to improve on.
