Understanding EN ISO 11611 Class 1 vs Class 2

EN ISO 11611:2015 classifies welding protective clothing into two risk categories based on spatter levels and radiant heat exposure. Class 1 welding sleeves protect against low-hazard techniques producing minimal spatter – typical for TIG welding, light MIG work, and controlled workshop environments. Class 2 provides higher protection for hazardous welding generating significant spatter and radiant heat – essential for stick welding, heavy MIG fabrication, overhead positions, and outdoor structural work.

The standard tests sleeves for flame spread (fabric mustn't continue burning after flame removal), molten metal splash resistance, radiant heat insulation, and electrical resistance preventing shock from accidental contact with live conductors up to 100V DC. HSE guidance mandates appropriate clothing covering arms and legs to protect against spatter during welding operations.

Material Selection: Leather vs Kevlar vs FR Cotton

Split cowhide leather sleeves offer the most durable protection against molten metal spatter, with thick leather naturally resisting penetration from hot droplets. Leather excels for MIG welding, stick welding, and any process producing heavy spatter, though it's heavier and less breathable than fabric alternatives. Kevlar welding sleeves use aramid fibres providing exceptional cut resistance, lighter weight, and heat resistance up to 425°C. Kevlar works brilliantly for TIG welding where precision matters and spatter levels are lower.

FR cotton sleeves use flame-retardant treated cotton providing the most breathable protection for light welding work, though they offer less spatter resistance than leather or Kevlar. Combination leather-Kevlar sleeves place leather on outer forearm (high spatter exposure) with Kevlar on inner forearm and bicep (flexibility areas), optimising protection whilst maintaining mobility.

Kevlar Stitching and Why It Matters

Kevlar stitching maintains thread integrity at temperatures up to 425°C, whilst standard cotton or nylon thread melts at 260°C creating weak seams that split during welding. Aramid thread ensures sleeve seams withstand repeated spark exposure without degrading. This single detail extends sleeve lifespan significantly – check stitching spec before buying.

When to Replace Welding Sleeves

Replace sleeves after 50–75 uses or when leather shows cracking, Kevlar develops tears, FR treatment washes out (test by holding flame to small area – should self-extinguish immediately), elastic loses tension, or stitching fails creating gaps exposing skin. Care for leather sleeves by wiping with damp cloth and saddle soap, applying leather conditioner to maintain suppleness. Kevlar and FR cotton sleeves machine wash at 40°C maximum using mild detergent without bleach (chlorine damages flame-retardant treatments), air drying rather than tumble drying.
