Anti Static Workwear

Anti-static workwear works through conductive fibres woven into the fabric—typically stainless steel or carbon threads. Think of these as electrical pathways that let static charges flow safely away from your body to the ground. Without them, friction and normal movement build static electricity on your clothing until it suddenly discharges as a spark. In explosive atmospheres where flammable gases, vapours, or combustible dust exist, that spark becomes an ignition source. Conductive fibres prevent charge buildup by continuously bleeding electricity to ground before it reaches dangerous levels.

EN 1149-5 certification proves the workwear meets strict safety standards for explosive atmosphere protection. Testing happens two ways: EN 1149-1 measures surface resistivity across the fabric (must stay below 2.5 × 10⁹ ohms), while EN 1149-3 measures how quickly accumulated charges dissipate through the conductive pathways. But fabric testing alone isn't enough. Garment design matters critically. Metal zips, buttons, and press studs must be completely covered with fabric so they can't act as isolated conductors that store charge and suddenly release it. Reflective tape has strict size limits because large non-conductive surfaces can accumulate dangerous static. The clothing must fasten securely at the front with tight wrist closures, ensuring no gaps where regular underlayers could poke through and contact external surfaces.

ATEX regulations classify explosive atmosphere environments into zones based on how likely and how long hazardous conditions exist. For gases and vapours: Zone 0 (explosive atmosphere present constantly), Zone 1 (likely during normal work), Zone 2 (unlikely and brief). For combustible dust: Zone 20 (dust cloud present constantly), Zone 21 (likely during normal work), Zone 22 (unlikely and brief). EN 1149-5 certified anti-static workwear protects you in zones 1, 2, 20, 21, and 22—which covers most explosive atmosphere work in petrochemical facilities, chemical plants, and fuel handling operations. You'll encounter this workwear in oil refineries processing crude oil, oil and gas extraction and transport, pharmaceutical production areas, paint and coating operations using solvents, and grain storage and milling where dust creates explosion risks.

Most anti-static workwear combines electrostatic protection with flame retardant properties, meeting dual certification to EN 1149-5 plus EN ISO 11612 (heat and flame protection) or EN ISO 14116 (limited flame spread). This makes practical sense because explosive atmosphere environments present multiple hazards—not just ignition risk from static discharge, but also exposure to flames, radiant heat, or molten substances if ignition occurs. Multi-norm garments use inherently flame retardant fibres that provide both anti-static and flame protection without chemical treatments that wash out over time. Heavy-duty coveralls in 260–300gsm fabrics handle demanding industrial conditions, with reinforced knee and seat panels extending the garment's working life in abrasive environments.

Here's what actually matters when using anti-static workwear: it only works as part of a complete earthed system. You must wear anti-static footwear certified to EN ISO 20345 with the 'A' designation, which provides electrical resistance below 10⁸ ohms. This creates a continuous pathway from your body, through your clothing, through your boots, to the ground. The garments must stay fastened during all work—front closures secured, wrist fastenings tight against your skin—ensuring no gaps expose regular clothing underneath. Remove metal jewellery like watches, rings, and chains because they act as isolated conductors that store charge. Regular inspections catch damage, wear, or contamination affecting anti-static properties. Quarterly testing programmes verify garments still meet certification levels throughout their working life. Conductive properties degrade over time with washing and wear, which is why monitoring and replacement schedules matter in high-risk operations.
