Arc Flash Clothing

(48 products)

Arc flash clothing isn't like regular flame-resistant gear. Arc flash events release temperatures exceeding 19,400°C in milliseconds—hot enough to cause fatal burns several metres away. Standard workwear designed for ordinary fires won't protect your workers. You need arc-rated clothing certified to handle the extreme thermal energy and pressure waves of electrical arc incidents.

The protection level you choose depends on the incident energy at your work location. That's measured in cal/cm² (calories per square centimetre). NFPA 70E and IEC 61482 standards define four categories, from 4 cal/cm² for routine switchgear operations up to 40+ cal/cm² for maximum-risk electrical work. Every garment carries an ATPV or EBT rating—that's the threshold energy level before second-degree burns become likely.

Core Protection Levels
  • Category 1 (4 cal/cm²) – routine electrical work, circuit breaker operations, infrared thermography
  • Category 2 (8 cal/cm²) – moderate hazards, removing covers to expose live parts, low-voltage equipment work
  • Category 3 (25 cal/cm²) – high-risk operations inside energised panels, bolted cover removal
  • Category 4 (40+ cal/cm²) – extreme incident energy exposures requiring maximum protection
Why Arc-Rated Workwear Matters

Arc flash protective clothing features inherent arc ratings that don't degrade. Modaflame and modacrylic fabrics char rather than melt under extreme heat, creating a protective barrier. Multi-layer systems increase protection—an 8 cal/cm² shirt under a 12 cal/cm² jacket provides roughly 20 cal/cm² combined. Complete protection includes long-sleeve shirts, trousers, arc flash suit hoods, arc-rated gloves, and safety footwear. Any exposed skin during an arc event suffers burns.

Your facility needs an arc flash hazard analysis to determine incident energy levels at specific work locations. That analysis tells you which category of arc flash ppe clothing each worker requires. We stock NFPA 70E compliant clothing with ratings from 4 to 40+ cal/cm², plus IEC 61482 certified garments for European compliance.
