Understanding EN ISO 20471 Class Ratings

EN ISO 20471:2013 defines three classes based on fluorescent fabric and reflective tape coverage. Class 2 needs 0.50m² fluorescent fabric and 0.13m² reflective tape, covering roadside work, construction sites, and anywhere vehicles travel over 25 mph. Class 3 provides 0.80m² fluorescent material and 0.20m² reflective tape – essential for motorway work, night shifts on busy roads, and high-risk environments. Standard vests can't achieve Class 3 alone; you need long sleeves or full-length trousers to create the required full body visibility outline.

Key Selection Criteria

Choose your vest based on traffic speed and lighting conditions. HSE guidance states: 'the darker the conditions or worksite, the greater the amount of HV clothing required.'
