Material Science: What Makes Kevlar Different

Kevlar is a para-aramid synthetic fibre developed by DuPont for high-stress industrial applications. Its molecular structure delivers tensile strength of around 3,000 MPa – roughly five times that of steel on an equal-weight basis. Unlike nylon or polyethylene, Kevlar maintains structural integrity from -73°C to 302°C continuously, with a decomposition point above 500°C. This thermal stability is why you'll find Kevlar in both cut-resistant and heat-resistant glove constructions.

The fibres are inherently flame-resistant and self-extinguishing. They char rather than melt, which prevents molten material adhering to skin – a critical advantage over cheaper synthetics during welding or foundry work.

Cut Resistance and Performance Levels

Kevlar gloves in this collection include models tested to EN 388, with many reaching Level 4 or Level 5 cut resistance. That performance depends on the knit density, yarn weight, and whether the glove uses pure Kevlar or a Kevlar blend. A 13-gauge Kevlar knit offers better dexterity for precision tasks like box cutting or component assembly. Heavier 7-gauge constructions provide more protection for metalworking or glass handling, at the cost of tactile feel.

Always verify the exact EN 388 rating on the product page – cut level, abrasion, tear, and puncture scores vary by model and coating type.

Heat Resistance: Contact, Radiant, and Convective

Kevlar withstands continuous exposure up to 302°C and intermittent contact with surfaces reaching 482°C. For welding operations, the material resists sparks, spatter, and radiant heat from arcs without igniting. However, Kevlar alone does not provide the same insulation as aluminised fabrics or thick leather – it protects against brief contact and flame exposure, not prolonged grip of hot objects.

If your work involves sustained handling of heated components above 250°C, pair Kevlar cut protection with additional thermal liners or choose a specialist high-temperature glove rated to EN 407.

Coating Options and Grip Performance

Many Kevlar gloves feature palm coatings to improve grip and extend wear life:
• Nitrile – oil and abrasion resistant; common in automotive and metalworking
• Polyurethane (PU) – thinner coating for maximum dexterity; used in precision assembly
• Latex – high grip in dry conditions; avoid if latex allergies are present
• Uncoated – maximum breathability and heat dissipation for welding

Coatings reduce breathability but add durability. For welding gloves, uncoated Kevlar is standard to prevent coating degradation from heat and sparks.

Common Specification Mistakes

Assuming all Kevlar gloves offer identical cut and heat protection. Performance varies significantly based on yarn weight, knit gauge, and coating. A lightweight Kevlar glove for woodworking won't provide the same defence as a heavy-duty metalworking style. Check the EN 388 mechanical scores and any EN 407 thermal ratings on each product listing – the Kevlar material alone is not a certification.
