Understanding UPF and EN 13758 Certification

UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) measures how much UV radiation penetrates fabric. UPF 50+ garments allow only 2% of UV rays to reach skin, blocking approximately 98% of both UVA and UVB radiation. That's more comprehensive than sunscreen alone, which you need to reapply every two hours and can miss spots. Heat Stress Management and Moisture Control

Moisture-wicking fabrics pull perspiration away from skin to the garment's outer surface, where it evaporates efficiently. Quick-drying synthetic materials prevent the discomfort and heat retention of sweat-soaked cotton. Employer Responsibilities and Best Practice

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 requires employers to assess health risks including UV radiation and heat. For prolonged outdoor work, you must provide sun protection workwear. The Considerate Constructors Scheme now promotes UV protection as part of its Code of Considerate Practice. Best practice includes: • Avoid peak sun (11am-3pm) where possible • Supply SPF 30+ sunscreen and UPF-rated clothing • Provide wide-brimmed hats and UV400 sunglasses • Train workers to recognise heat stress symptoms (dizziness, excessive sweating, fatigue)

Remove PPE during rest breaks to encourage heat loss. Combine protective clothing with regular hydration and task scheduling—no single measure covers all risks.
