Waterproof vs Water Resistant: Understanding the Ratings

The terms aren't interchangeable. Water-resistant gloves repel moisture but will eventually let water through under sustained exposure or pressure – they're suitable for damp conditions, light rain, or occasional splashes. Waterproof working gloves use impermeable barriers (coated fabrics, sealed membranes, or full-dip construction) that block liquid penetration entirely, even during immersion or prolonged contact.

Many models in this collection meet EN 388 mechanical risk standards; check individual listings for exact abrasion, cut, tear, and puncture ratings. Waterproofing alone doesn't guarantee durability – a thin waterproof glove may offer excellent liquid protection but limited abrasion resistance.

Coating Materials and Trade-Offs

Coating type determines grip, flexibility, and chemical compatibility. Nitrile-coated gloves offer strong oil and grease resistance plus good abrasion performance – common in automotive and machinery work. PVC provides excellent waterproofing and chemical resistance but can feel stiff in cold temperatures. The most common mistake? Choosing full-dip coatings (waterproof but non-breathable) for all-day wear in moderate conditions. Your hands will sweat, and moisture builds up inside. For active work, palm-coated or breathable-membrane styles offer better comfort.

Thermal Insulation: When You Need It, When You Don't

Unlined waterproof gloves maximise dexterity – they're the right choice for precision tasks, warmer weather, or high-activity work where your hands generate heat. Thermal waterproof work gloves add fleece, foam, or Thinsulate linings for cold and wet environments: winter groundwork, cold store operations, outdoor maintenance in freezing conditions. The trade-off is always bulk vs warmth. Waterproof winter work gloves typically sacrifice some tactile feel for insulation.

If you're working in sub-zero temperatures, look for gloves combining waterproof membranes with EN 511 cold protection ratings (listed per product). Warm waterproof work gloves without cold certification may insulate but won't guarantee performance below specific thresholds.

Sizing, Fit and Maintenance

Measure hand circumference at the widest part (across the knuckles, excluding the thumb). Sizes typically run 7–11 (XS–XXL). Coated gloves should fit snugly but not restrict circulation – too loose and you lose dexterity; too tight and seams may split or reduce waterproof integrity at stress points.

Rinse gloves after exposure to chemicals, oils, or salt. Coatings degrade faster when contaminants are left to sit. Inspect seams and coating integrity regularly – pinhole damage isn't always obvious until your hands get wet mid-shift. Replace gloves when coatings crack, peel, or lose flexibility. Storage matters: keep them away from direct sunlight and heat sources, both of which accelerate material breakdown.
