1. Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to set out the commitment of Gloves n Stuff Ltd to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety, and welfare of its employees and any other persons who may be affected by its business activities, in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and associated regulations.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all employees, temporary workers, agency staff, contractors, visitors, and any other persons affected by the operations of Gloves n Stuff Ltd.
The policy covers all company activities including:
- Office and administrative work
- Warehousing, storage, picking and packing operations
- Loading and unloading deliveries
- Use of storage systems and access equipment
- Use of display screen equipment (DSE)
- Visitors and delivery drivers attending site
- Home working where applicable
3. Policy Statement
Gloves n Stuff Ltd is committed to providing and maintaining a safe and healthy working environment for all employees and others who may be affected by our activities.
The company will, so far as is reasonably practicable:
- Provide safe systems of work
- Provide and maintain safe plant, equipment, and working environments
- Ensure safe handling, storage, and transport of goods
- Provide information, instruction, training, and supervision to employees
- Carry out risk assessments and implement appropriate control measures
- Prevent accidents, injuries, and work-related ill health
- Consult with employees on matters affecting their health and safety
- Maintain safe access and egress to all work areas
- Provide adequate welfare facilities
- Review and update this policy regularly
This policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if there are significant changes to business operations or legislation.
4. Responsibilities
4.1 Director / Senior Management
The Director has overall responsibility for health and safety within Gloves n Stuff Ltd and will:
- Ensure the company complies with health and safety legislation
- Ensure risk assessments are carried out and reviewed
- Provide adequate resources for health and safety
- Ensure employees receive appropriate training
- Investigate accidents and implement corrective actions
- Review this policy annually
4.2 Managers / Supervisors
Managers and supervisors are responsible for:
- Implementing this policy in their areas of responsibility
- Ensuring employees work safely and follow procedures
- Ensuring risk assessments are followed
- Reporting hazards, incidents, and near misses
- Ensuring good housekeeping standards are maintained
- Ensuring new employees receive induction training
4.3 Employees
All employees have a legal duty to:
- Take reasonable care of their own health and safety
- Take reasonable care of others who may be affected by their actions
- Follow company health and safety procedures
- Use equipment safely and as instructed
- Report hazards, accidents, and near misses
- Cooperate with management on health and safety matters
5. Procedures and Arrangements
5.1 Risk Assessments
The company will carry out and regularly review risk assessments for all work activities. Control measures will be implemented to reduce risks to an acceptable level.
5.2 Manual Handling
The company will:
- Avoid manual handling where possible
- Provide manual handling training
- Use appropriate lifting aids where necessary
- Ensure employees do not lift loads beyond their capability
5.3 Slips, Trips and Housekeeping
Work areas will be kept clean and tidy. Walkways and fire exits must be kept clear at all times. Spillages must be cleaned immediately and waste packaging disposed of safely.
5.4 Storage and Racking
All stock will be stored safely and securely. Shelving and racking must not be overloaded. Heavy items should be stored at lower levels where possible.
5.5 Work at Height
Only suitable equipment such as step ladders will be used for accessing stock. Employees must not stand on chairs or unsuitable objects.
5.6 Display Screen Equipment (DSE)
Office employees using computers will be provided with suitable workstations and guidance on correct workstation setup to reduce the risk of strain or injury.
5.7 Fire Safety
The company will:
- Carry out fire risk assessments
- Maintain fire alarm and fire extinguishing equipment
- Provide fire evacuation procedures
- Carry out fire drills where appropriate
- Keep fire exits clear at all times
5.8 First Aid
The company will provide adequate first aid equipment and ensure appropriate first aid arrangements are in place.
5.9 Accident and Incident Reporting
All accidents, near misses, and dangerous occurrences must be reported and recorded. Incidents will be investigated and corrective actions implemented. Incidents reportable under RIDDOR will be reported to the relevant authority.
5.10 Training
Employees will receive:
- Health and safety induction training
- Manual handling training where required
- Fire safety awareness training
- Task-specific training relevant to their role
5.11 Contractors and Visitors
All contractors and visitors must comply with company health and safety rules while on site and must report to a member of staff on arrival.
6. Monitoring and Review
The company will monitor health and safety performance through:
- Workplace inspections
- Accident and incident reviews
- Risk assessment reviews
- Employee feedback
- Annual policy review
This policy will be reviewed at least annually and updated where necessary.
