Cut Level F gloves are the top certification tier under EN 388:2016, tested to withstand 30+ Newtons of cutting force. If you handle plate glass, metal stamping dies, or sharp metal recycling, this is the protection level your risk assessment demands. Lower-level cut resistant gloves (Levels B through E) simply won't protect against arterial laceration risks from those hazards.

The difference between Level F and older standards matters. The old Cut Level 5 gloves under EN 388:2003 tested differently and don't translate directly to modern EN 388:2016. Level F is the current highest rating, tested using the Tomodynamometer (TDM) method – a standardised blade that eliminates testing inconsistencies.

Cut Level F protection comes from advanced-performance materials. HPPE (High-Performance Polyethylene, branded as Dyneema) fibres are 15 times stronger than steel by weight yet flexible enough for dexterity. Glass fibre composites use ultra-hard silica fibres that dull cutting blades rapidly. Steel-reinforced options add maximum metal protection. Most models blend multiple materials for balanced cut resistance and wearability.

Palm coatings determine how the gloves feel and perform beyond cutting. Nitrile-dipped palms resist oils and cutting fluids (essential for metalworking). Polyurethane coatings maximise tactile sensitivity for precision glass handling. Sandy-finish textures lock grip on smooth surfaces, reducing dangerous drops.

When You Actually Need Level F

Extreme hazards only. Automotive windscreens, architectural glass sheets, metal stamping presses, heavy metal recycling, guillotine operations, and demolition-waste sorting. For general manufacturing or light metal assembly, Cut Level C or D gloves offer adequate protection with better finger mobility. Overspecifying to Level F in moderate-hazard work reduces dexterity unnecessarily – sometimes that increases injury risk by causing fumbling or dropped objects.
