A hi-vis coat is longer than hip length. Most fall mid-thigh to just below the knee. Common styles include parkas, storm coats, and 4-in-1 systems. They give you more coverage. Think of a highways worker standing at the roadside in driving rain — a coat keeps their thighs dry.
A hi-vis jacket is hip-length. It stops at or just below your waist. Common styles include bomber jackets, softshells, and fleece-lined shells. You move more freely in one. A bricklayer climbing scaffolding needs that movement.
Both can carry EN ISO 20471 hi-vis certification. Both can be waterproofed to EN 343. The length is the only real difference — but that difference matters for your job.
Waterproof vs water resistant: what actually keeps you dry?
Not every hi-vis coat or jacket sold as "waterproof" actually is. Two terms get mixed up constantly.
Water resistant means the fabric has a DWR coating. DWR stands for durable water repellent. It makes rain bead off the surface. Fine for a light drizzle. Give it heavy, sustained rain and it soaks through. There are no sealed seams. Zip joins and pocket openings let water in.
Waterproof means something much more specific. The fabric uses a membrane or laminated coating to block water. All seams are taped or welded shut. The first number is the waterproof rating, scored 1 to 4. Higher is better.
- Class 1 — light shower protection only. Tested on new fabric, no pre-treatment.

- Class 3 — heavy rain, long hours outdoors. Higher pressure threshold after pre-treatment.

Some older product pages still list Class 3 as the top. It isn't. Class 4 is.
The second number is breathability — also 1 to 4. Higher means more moisture gets out. That matters for active workers. A garment that traps sweat leaves your workers just as wet, but from the inside out.
The breathability rating is based on how easily water vapour passes through the fabric. Class 3 breathability means no time limit on wearing at temperatures of 20°C or below. Class 1 means you should only wear it for 75 minutes at 20°C before the wearer starts to overheat. That's a real limit for active outdoor workers on a full shift.
EN 343 Class 3:3 is the sweet spot for most outdoor roles. Very good waterproofing with good breathability. If your workers are standing still in very heavy rain — traffic management, for example — look for options rated Class 4 on the first number. Just check the second number too. A 4:1 rating keeps rain out but gives your worker no breathability. They'll overheat fast.
