Contact Heat vs Radiant Heat Protection

EN 407 standard testing covers contact heat only up to 500°C – touching a heated cylinder directly. Aluminized gloves rated for 1000°C defend primarily against radiant heat: infrared radiation emitted by furnace walls, molten steel at 1,500-1,600°C, or glass melting tanks. You're not touching these surfaces (physically impossible for more than a split second), but working close enough that radiation alone causes severe burns. The aluminized outer layer reflects 95-97% of infrared energy back, whilst inner Kevlar and wool felt layers provide insulation and brief contact protection.

Material Construction at Extreme Temperatures

Options in this collection feature aluminized aramid fabric using aluminum foil bonded to 440-750 GSM Kevlar, creating a reflective barrier tested to EN ISO 6942:2002 Method B at 20 kW/m². Many models include a second wool felt layer providing thermal mass and insulation – wool's natural moisture absorption prevents "steam burn" where perspiration heats rapidly inside the glove. Inner linings use flame-retardant cotton for comfort during extended wear. Extended cuff lengths of 35-45cm protect forearms when reaching towards heat sources with tools. Molten metal splash protection follows EN 373 testing, where molten iron is poured onto material to verify it won't stick, melt through, or ignite.

Critical Safety Limitations and Use

These gloves provide seconds of protection during brief exposure, not minutes of sustained contact. If holding a 1000°C object directly, you have perhaps 3-5 seconds before heat conducts through layers. They're designed for working near extreme heat whilst using tongs, ladles, or tools – not bare-hand handling of molten material. The primary danger is moisture: perspiration inside the glove turns to steam instantly on heat exposure, causing severe burns. Some operations require thin cotton liner gloves underneath to absorb moisture, changed frequently during shifts.

Care, Inspection and Replacement

Inspect the aluminized layer daily for tears, delamination, or loss of reflective coating – damaged aluminization means compromised radiant heat protection. Store gloves flat or hanging (never crumpled) to prevent creasing the aluminum layer. Clean with damp cloth only; machine washing damages the aluminized coating. Replace gloves immediately if you see: • Charring or stiffness • Loss of flexibility • Breaches in the outer layer • Delamination of aluminized coating. Suited for steel mill operations, foundry metal casting, glass furnace work, aluminum smelting, forge operations, scrap metal recycling, furnace maintenance, and heat treatment facilities where you're exposed to extreme radiant heat or molten metal splash hazards.
