Understanding EN 407 Level 3 Contact Heat Testing

EN 407 Level 3 gloves must delay a 10°C internal temperature rise for at least 15 seconds when pressed against a 350°C heated metal cylinder. This standardised testing ensures adequate protection during typical MIG welding operations and moderate industrial heat exposure. The test measures contact heat only – convective heat (hot air and flame) and radiant heat (infrared radiation from hot metal and welding arcs) are rated separately. Material Selection for Balanced Performance

Achieving reliable 350°C protection whilst maintaining excellent dexterity requires careful material selection. Kevlar aramid provides an ideal combination for many applications – these para-aramid fibres resist degradation up to 425°C (exceeding the 350°C requirement) whilst maintaining thin, flexible construction that preserves hand dexterity significantly better than heavily insulated leather alternatives. Soft leather options using goatskin or premium split cowhide offer natural thermal insulation combined with exceptional flexibility. The natural material breathes better than synthetic alternatives, reducing hand perspiration during extended wear, and moulds to individual hand shapes improving fit and comfort over time.

Hot Metal Handling Beyond Welding

Many industrial operations involve handling heated metal components at 250-350°C temperatures unrelated to welding processes. Parts emerging from heating ovens before forming operations, thermally treated components requiring positioning for cooling, heated assemblies during thermal bonding processes, and warm castings during finishing operations all present moderate heat hazards requiring Level 3 protection. Manufacturing environments using induction heating, resistance heating, or oven heating benefit from 350°C gloves providing adequate thermal protection for brief-to-moderate duration contact with heated components whilst maintaining hand mobility essential for precise component positioning, quality inspection, and detailed assembly work.

Common Specification Mistakes

The most common mistake is over-specifying to 500°C gloves for work that doesn't require extreme protection. Higher temperature ratings typically mean thicker insulation, which reduces tactile sensitivity and hand control. For MIG welding, hot metal fabrication below 350°C, and general industrial heat work, Level 3 gloves provide the protection you need without sacrificing the dexterity required for quality work. Conversely, basic 100-250°C gloves offer inadequate protection for MIG welding and moderate industrial heat exposure – contact with 300°C metal through a Level 1 glove causes burns within 4 seconds, insufficient time to safely release a hot component.
