Chef Jackets

A chef jacket isn't just about looking the part—it's your first line of defence against kitchen heat, spills, and contamination. The key decision? Double-breasted or single. Double-breasted chef jackets let you flip the front when one side gets soiled, giving you a fresh appearance mid-shift. Single-breasted styles offer a lighter, more modern cut.

Most professional chef jackets feature press-stud fastenings instead of traditional buttons—crucially important for food safety. Buttons can fall into food; press-studs don't. Look for designs with no external pockets (HACCP compliant) to prevent contaminants, foreign objects, or pests from hiding in folds.

Material and Wash Durability

Polyester and poly-cotton blends withstand repeated industrial laundering at 85°C or higher—essential for eliminating bacteria between shifts. White chef jackets remain the standard because contamination shows immediately, but many facilities now use colour-coded systems (blue for fish prep, red for raw meat, green for vegetables) to prevent cross-contamination.

HACCP Compliance and Food Safety Design

Food safe chef jackets must eliminate contamination risks that standard workwear ignores. HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) compliance often requires press-stud fastenings instead of buttons—buttons can fall off and contaminate products, while studs stay secure. External pockets are removed in many designs to prevent foreign objects, pests, or debris from hiding in folds. Smooth, tightly woven fabrics reduce fibre shedding into food, and seams are designed for easy cleaning. These aren't cosmetic choices—they're risk controls.

Colour-Coded Systems for Cross-Contamination Prevention

White chef jackets remain traditional because contamination shows instantly, prompting immediate garment changes. But modern food facilities increasingly use colour-coded workwear to designate production areas: red zones for raw meat, blue for fish, green for vegetables, white for bakery. If someone wearing a red jacket enters the green zone, cross-contamination risk is visible immediately. This visual management system is essential in large facilities with multiple processing lines.

Industrial Laundering and Fabric Performance

Chef jackets face repeated industrial washing at 85°C or higher—temperatures required to eliminate bacteria and meet hygiene standards. Polyester and poly-cotton blends withstand these conditions, maintaining colour, shape, and integrity through hundreds of wash cycles that would destroy cotton or standard workwear. Quick-drying properties reduce turnaround times between shifts, critical in high-volume kitchens where spare jackets are limited.

Fit and Style Options

Double-breasted chef jackets allow you to reverse the front panel when one side gets soiled, extending wearable time during busy services. Single-breasted styles offer a lighter, more contemporary fit suited to open kitchens or front-of-house chefs. Executive chef jackets often feature black or coloured accents for distinction. Women's and men's cuts differ in torso length, shoulder width, and waist shaping—proper fit matters when you're working a full shift in a hot kitchen.
