Understanding EN 388 and EN 374 Standards

EN 388 tests cut resistance using a rotating circular blade (ISO 13997 method). Cut levels range from 1 to 5, with Level 5 offering the highest protection against blade contact. EN 374:2016 tests chemical resistance by measuring how quickly a hazardous substance permeates through the glove material. Chemical classifications (Type A, B, C) indicate the number and type of chemicals tested. These two standards operate independently – a glove can be Level 5 for cut but only Type B for chemicals, or vice versa. Both certifications must be third-party tested for legal sale in Europe.

What Cut Resistance Levels Actually Mean

Level 1 provides basic abrasion resistance but minimal cut protection. By Level 3, you're handling moderate blade contact safely. Level 4 and 5 are reserved for heavy-duty environments where sharp tool contact is frequent and prolonged. Importantly, higher isn't always better for your specific role – Level 3 cut resistance might be fully adequate for food prep work, but overspecifying to Level 5 adds stiffness and reduces hand sensitivity when dexterity is critical.

Chemical Protection: Type A, B, and C Explained

Type A chemical protection means the glove has been tested against a broad spectrum of dangerous chemicals (typically 12 substances). Type B narrows that to a smaller range, and Type C is more limited still. For wet-work and prolonged water/chemical contact (like daily dishwashing or handling cleaning solutions), EN 374-2 waterproof certification is essential – the HSE explicitly recommends this designation to prevent skin breakdown from prolonged moisture exposure.

Common Specification Mistakes

The biggest mistake is assuming a high cut level automatically handles chemical hazards, or vice versa. The two protections are completely separate tests. You might have Level 5 cut resistance but only Type C chemical coverage – inadequate if you're handling strong solvents. Conversely, Type A chemical gloves with only Level 2 cut resistance will fail badly if sharp tools are involved. Always check both ratings on the product page before purchase. Another common error: confusing waterproof (EN 374-2) with chemical-resistant. A waterproof glove may resist water contact but offer no chemical permeation protection.
