Standards and Certification

Quality disposable gloves are manufactured to EN 420 (general requirements for safety gloves) and EN 374 where chemical splash or micro-organism protection is claimed. Medical examination gloves follow EN 455 parts 1-4, covering freedom from holes, physical properties, biological evaluation, and shelf-life. Not all disposal gloves carry these marks—check individual product listings for exact compliance. EN 420 defines sizing, comfort, dexterity, and innocuousness (no harmful substances). If your application involves infectious agents or hazardous chemicals, verify the glove meets the relevant EN 374 Type or Level designation.

Key Selection Criteria: Material, Thickness, and Allergy Status

Material drives performance. Latex disposable gloves offer the best tactile sensitivity and stretch, making them first choice for precision work—suturing, pipetting, intricate assembly. But latex allergy prevalence is rising; many healthcare and food facilities now operate latex-free. Nitrile disposable gloves deliver comparable feel and superior puncture resistance, plus resistance to oils, greases, and many chemicals. They're the go-to for automotive detailing, labs, and tattoo work. Vinyl is the economical option: lower elasticity and tear resistance, but perfectly adequate for short-duration, low-risk tasks like food service, housekeeping, or hair colouring.

Thickness matters for durability and barrier integrity. Thinner gloves (3-4 mil) maximise dexterity; thicker variants (5-6 mil) reduce puncture risk. Powder-free is now standard in healthcare and food to prevent contamination and allergic reactions to cornstarch powder.

Colour and Sizing for Operational Efficiency

Blue disposable gloves dominate food processing because the colour contrasts with most foods—torn fragments are visible. Black disposable gloves are popular in automotive, mechanics' workshops, and beauty (tattoo, hair) for aesthetic reasons and to hide staining. Pink, purple, and other colours help with task or allergen differentiation in kitchens or care environments.

Sizing is critical. A glove that's too tight tears easily and causes hand fatigue over a full shift. Too loose and you lose grip and control, increasing contamination risk. Most brands size S through XL; measure hand circumference at the knuckles for accurate fit. Large latex disposable gloves and other size variants are stocked in boxes of 100 or bulk cartons to reduce reordering overhead.

Disposable gloves are single-use PPE. Don't wash and reuse them—microperforations compromise barrier integrity even when invisible. Change gloves between tasks to prevent cross-contamination, especially in food and clinical settings.

Common Specification Mistakes

Choosing latex in a known allergy environment is the most frequent error. If any staff or clients have latex sensitivity, switch to nitrile or vinyl across the board. Specifying vinyl for chemical or high-puncture-risk tasks is another mistake—vinyl tears easily and offers minimal chemical resistance. Over-specifying thickness adds cost and reduces dexterity without meaningful benefit in low-risk applications. Conversely, under-specifying for clinical or hazardous-chemical work exposes users to infection or burns. Always match glove specification to the actual hazard and duration of exposure.
