Understanding EN ISO 20345:2022 Ratings

EN ISO 20345:2022 is the current UK and EU safety footwear standard. All certified steel toe cap shoes must pass impact tests at 200 joules minimum—that's the energy from a 20kg object dropped from one metre. The standard also tests corrosion resistance and behaviour under heat and chemical exposure.

Ratings start at SB (basic toe protection only) and climb through S1 to S5, each adding features. S1 adds closed heels, antistatic properties, and energy absorption in the heel. S2 includes water resistance. S3 adds a puncture-resistant midsole and cleated outsole. S4 and S5 are fully waterproof; S5 includes puncture resistance for the harshest wet environments. The 2011 and 2022 versions of the standard coexist until November 2029, so check which version your footwear is certified to.

Choosing the Right Rating for Your Work

SB suits low-risk indoor roles—light assembly, clean warehouses. S1 is the baseline for most general industry work. S3 is the go-to for construction, outdoor logistics, and any site with sharp debris or wet conditions. S5 is for environments where your feet are regularly exposed to water, chemicals, or both—agriculture, food processing, utilities.

The most common mistake? Overspecifying. An S5 boot on a dry warehouse floor adds weight and heat for no benefit. Underspecifying is worse: SB-rated shoes on a construction site leave you unprotected against punctures. Match the rating to the actual hazards, not just the job title.

Steel vs. Composite: What's the Difference?

Steel toe caps are durable, affordable, and meet the 200-joule standard reliably. They're heavier than composite alternatives and conduct cold—an issue in refrigerated environments or winter outdoor work. Steel also triggers metal detectors, slowing security checks at airports, prisons, and high-security sites. Composite toe caps (covered separately) solve those issues but at a higher price point. For most industrial roles, steel toe shoes offer the best balance of protection and cost.

Legal Requirements and Employer Responsibilities

Under the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992, employers must provide suitable safety footwear where risk assessments identify foot injury hazards. That includes impact, crushing, puncture, and slip risks. The footwear must be correctly rated, properly fitted, and replaced when it no longer provides adequate protection. Check your workplace risk assessment—it defines the minimum rating you're legally required to wear.

Fit, Sizing, and Replacement Indicators

Steel toe work shoes should fit snugly at the heel with enough toe room that you're not hitting the cap during downhill walking or kneeling. Worn-out shoes lose their protective integrity: replace them when you see sole separation, visible cracks in the upper, deformed toe caps, or compressed midsoles that no longer absorb shock. Most high-use environments see replacement every 6–12 months.
